Airport transit tips: Dubai, Doha and Istanbul

A connection is more than the gap between two flight times. Check the ticket arrangement, airports, baggage and documents as one journey.

General preparation, not a statement of current airline policy or legal, medical or religious advice. Confirm exact requirements with your operating airline and the relevant official authority before travelling.

Know whether you have one ticket or separate tickets

Ask the airline or issuing agent whether flights are on a single protected itinerary and how a missed connection would be handled. Separate bookings may require collecting bags and checking in again. Do not assume booking both flights on one website gives the same protection.

Dubai: check the exact airports and terminals

Read the airport codes on each flight; a Dubai itinerary can involve different airports, not just terminals. Use the airport’s official transfer guidance and ask the airline whether bags are checked through or immigration and a new check-in are required.

Doha and Istanbul: follow your booked transfer route

At Doha, use Hamad International Airport’s transfer guidance and confirm your next gate. For Istanbul, verify the airport code on both tickets rather than assuming all flights use the same airport. Check airline instructions for transfers, security and onward boarding passes.

Check entry and transit permission before departure

Ask the relevant authority about requirements for your nationality, documents and itinerary, especially if collecting bags, changing airports or staying overnight. Allow for walking, screening and gate changes, and ask the airline whether the connection is suitable; this guide gives no universal minimum connection time.

Check with official sources

These are official starting points, not a promise that one airline’s policy applies to another. Check the current guidance for your own itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Do Pakistani passport holders always need a transit visa?

There is no single answer for all airports and itineraries. Check the relevant authority’s current requirements using your nationality, route and whether you must enter the country.

Will my suitcase automatically reach the final destination?

Ask at check-in and read the destination printed on the baggage tag. Ticket arrangements and airline agreements matter; do not assume a through-check is available.

Is an overnight connection the same as entry permission?

No. Confirm whether you can remain airside, whether facilities are available and whether your plans require entry permission. A hotel booking does not replace immigration permission.

How much time should I leave between flights?

Ask the airline or agent about the exact itinerary and your assistance needs. Separate tickets, baggage collection, airport changes and immigration can require substantially different arrangements.
